PS3 World: test checklist (real PS3, HEN)

Tick each box. Where a step fails, note what the screen said and copy /dev_hdd0/game/PSWD00001/USRDIR/ps3world_log.txt off the console (FTP or multiMAN). The log records every request, download, checksum and path.

Before you start

  • The catalogue is uploaded: rclone copy "G:\ps3world-catalog\catalog" R2:ps3wrld-content/catalog --progress, then https://dl.ps3.world/catalog/v1/catalog.json opens in a browser.
  • The PS3 is on HEN (enabled this boot), online, and the date and time are right (Settings > Date and Time Settings). TLS checks certificate dates against the clock.
  • PS3World.pkg from the latest GitHub Actions run (artifact PS3World) is installed: copy it to /dev_hdd0/packages/ or a USB drive, then Package Manager > Install Package Files.

1. Open the app

  • PS3 World is on the XMB under Game with the PS3 World icon, and the waves picture shows behind it when highlighted.

  • It opens to "Loading the catalogue..." (a few seconds at most: only the small index downloads), then the home screen: three cards as on ps3.world's home page (Homebrew large on the left, Themes and Avatars on the right), each with its character art, a cyan kicker, its title, a line of text and category chips.

  • D-pad moves between the cards: the selected one has a blue outline and brighter art.

  • Cross on Homebrew shows its categories as four art cards: Games 5, Ports 17, Tools 13, Media 5. Circle goes back home.

  • Cross on Themes shows a grid: All themes 13,303, then 17 categories (Games, Anime & Comics, Movies & TV...). Down scrolls the grid. Avatars: All avatars 507 packs, then US, EU, Japan, Asia, and Other last.

  • The Homebrew card's title doesn't cover Kratos's face.

  • In a list, R1/L1 go to the next/previous category of that section (Homebrew > Games, R1: Ports, then Edits, Tools, Media, back to Games); the bar at the top shows the categories, the current one filled. On the categories screen the bar shows Homebrew, Themes, Avatars, and R1/L1 go to the next/previous section; in My downloads it shows My downloads, Favourites (R1 crashed in the first build).

  • Homebrew > Edits lists the 4 PS2 Classics with their covers (about 3.5-4.7 GB each). One downloads to /dev_hdd0/packages and installs from Package Manager. [unverified until this step passes]

  • Avatars > Asia: the BlazBlue and Dynasty Warriors packs show their icons (their ids were too long before 0.5.3, and the icons never loaded).

  • Open the app and quit straight away (PS button > Quit Game). Reopen it: the log says "drawn by the RSX", not "the CPU draws". If the CPU ever draws after a freeze, hold R1 while the app starts to try the graphics chip again.

  • Send me the two selftest: lines from ps3world_log.txt (whether ".." goes up a folder, and whether rename replaces a file), and any https: recv failed, errno line.

  • On a 4:3 TV (Settings > Display Settings > Video Output Settings, TV type 4:3): the picture is letterboxed, the right shape with black bars above and below, not squashed, with either renderer (hold L1 at start for the CPU one). The log says "(4:3, letterboxed)". On a 16:9 TV there are no bars.

1b. Languages (1.1.0)

  • With the PS3 in Spanish (Settings > Language Settings > System Language), the app opens in Spanish: cards, hints, the detail screen, errors. Theme categories are Spanish too; item names and descriptions stay as they are on the site.
  • Home > Select: the language screen. The top card is "The PS3's language (...)" with that language's flag; under it a grid of 16 flags, 4 across, each with its own name and the English name under it, a blue dot on the one in use. Up/Down/Left/Right move around the grid, Down from the last row reaches the sound switch. No name runs past its card. The screen opens straight away, even the first time (the Chinese, Japanese and Korean names are pictures, so it no longer loads the PS3's CJK fonts; the log has no SCE-PS3 font lines until one of those languages is picked). Those three names sit level with the others. Pick Français: everything changes at once, and it's still French after quitting and reopening.
  • Pick العربية (Arabic): the letters are joined (not separate shapes) and read right to left; numbers and paths in a line (/dev_hdd0..., 45%) stay left to right. The whole screen is mirrored: text right-aligned, hints from the right, list icons on the right, the detail preview on the right, card art on the left (turned round). Previews and icons are not mirrored.
  • Pick Русский (Russian), or set the PS3 to Russian: everything in Russian (Cyrillic from DejaVu), homebrew descriptions too once the catalogue is uploaded. The whole grid and the sound card fit above the hints.
  • In Arabic, the controls are mirrored too: Left moves right on screen and Right moves left (in lists, card rows and the language grid), and L1/R1 swap so the button on the screen's side goes that way. Up/Down are unchanged.
  • Pick 中文 (简体), 日本語 and 한국어 in turn, or set the PS3 to Chinese (Simplified), Japanese or Korean: the screens are in that language, using the PS3's own fonts, with no boxes. Long lines wrap; hints don't run into the download strip. Homebrew descriptions are translated once the catalogue is uploaded. [unverified: whether every simplified Chinese character is in the PS3 fonts]
  • Polish and Turkish letters (ą ę ł ż, ğ ş ı İ) show, not boxes.
  • Long German or French hints don't run into the download strip bottom right.
  • Back to "The PS3's language": it follows the console again.

1c. Grid, Installed, download speed (1.2.1)

  • Opening the app: from black, the logo eases up and in, a soft cyan glow passes behind it (no visible rings), a line draws out under it with ps3.world, then it all fades into the home screen (or the loading message), about 2 s, smooth with no stutter. Pressing a button during it goes straight to the fade. Try it with the CPU renderer too (720p).

  • Themes > any category: a grid of previews, 5 a row, 3 rows; the one picked has a blue ring, its title, author, size and badges under the grid. Left/Right move one, Up/Down a row; Down onto a shorter last row goes to its last. Holding a direction scrolls a row at a time, the bar on the right showing where. L2/R2 still jump by letter (A-Z order).

  • Avatars: the same with square pictures, 8 a row; a pack opens (Cross) as a grid of its avatars, Circle back to the packs. Square still queues a pack.

  • A downloaded theme or avatar has a small green tick in its corner; a favourite a yellow star.

  • Homebrew stays a list. Something installed from Package Manager (PS3 World itself, under Tools) shows Installed instead of Downloaded (after the catalogue's rebuilt with the new generator).

  • Update: replace an installed homebrew's PKG in D:PS3 WORLD R2 with a newer one (same title ID), rebuild and upload the catalogue: in the app it shows a blue Update instead of Installed. Download and install it: back to Installed. Something never replaced shows no Update. (The first rebuild with this generator only records the PKGs: nothing shows Update until one changes.)

  • While a download runs, the strip bottom right shows its speed ("1.2 MB/s"); its detail screen shows the speed and about how long is left.

  • Home: the hints along the bottom end with Circle Quit, nothing beside them. Circle once: a note top right says to press again; anything else and the note goes. Circle twice within 4 s: back to the XMB (the log ends with "ui: quit to the XMB"). With a download running, the note says it picks up next time, and it does.

  • Home, top right under the version: the free space ("212 GB free on the HDD · 14 downloaded"); while downloading, the download's strip there instead; with a new version out, that line; a note beats them all.

  • Updating from 1.2.0: after the catalogue loads, a What's new screen lists the five changes (in the app's language); Cross goes home. Quit and reopen: it doesn't come back. A fresh install (no catalogue cached, nothing downloaded) goes straight home.

  • In Arabic, the grid is mirrored: the first item top right, Left/Right still move the way they point.

2. Browse

  • Cross opens a category's list, Circle goes back to the categories, and Circle again goes home.
  • Up/Down move one row, Left/Right a screen. Holding a direction repeats and speeds up.
  • In Themes > All themes, hold Down past item 100: rows show "Loading..." for a moment while the next page arrives, then fill in. Scrolling back up is instant.
  • Icons appear as you scroll (first time from the server, then from the HDD). Theme rows show a small 16:9 preview of the theme, not a square icon.
  • A theme's detail screen shows its preview large (640x360) on the left, with Author, Size, Category, Works on and Saves to on the right, then the description; under the preview, how to use it after it downloads. An avatar shows square in the middle of the preview box; a homebrew item shows its screenshot. "Loading the preview..." shows briefly the first time.
  • L1/R1 switch between Homebrew, Themes and Avatars.
  • In All themes, R2 jumps to the next letter and L2 to the previous one. The letter and position show bottom right.
  • Triangle opens the keyboard. Search "wolf" in All themes: only matching themes are listed, with "Search: "wolf"" at the top. Square (or Circle) clears it.
  • Cross opens an item's detail screen (description, size, "Saves to ..."; "Works on: CFW only" only for the few that need CFW). Lists show no HEN / CFW badge, only "CFW only" where it applies. Circle goes back to the same row.

3. Homebrew download (PKG)

  • Homebrew > Games: open Avoidance (285 KB). It says "Saves to /dev_hdd0/packages/Avoidance v1.3.pkg".
  • Cross: the progress bar, %, MB and speed move, then "Checksum OK (278 KB). Saved to /dev_hdd0/packages/Avoidance v1.3.pkg".
  • Back in the list, Avoidance has a green Downloaded badge.
  • XMB > Package Manager > Install Package Files lists Avoidance v1.3.pkg, and it installs. [unverified until this step passes]

4. Cancel and resume

  • Open a big homebrew item (Homebrew > Ports > Undertale, 148 MB) and press Cross, then Square part way: "Download cancelled", and no Undertale.pkg.part is left in /dev_hdd0/packages/.
  • Start it again, and part way pull the network cable (or turn Wi-Fi off). After about 30 s it shows the network error and "Press X to resume where it stopped".
  • Reconnect and press Cross: "Resumed from N MB" shows, and it finishes with "Checksum OK".
  • Optional: start it again and quit to the XMB (PS button > Quit Game) part way. Reopen the app and download again: it resumes rather than starting over.

4d. The New ticker, theme previews (1.2.0)

  • Home: a cyan New label beside the logo, then the Recently added titles by section ("Homebrew: qDNSm · ezDNS ..."), scrolling smoothly right to left and round again. With nothing new, no ticker.
  • Themes (the categories, and any list): bottom right, "Not every theme has a preview: some were archived without one." A theme with no preview says "This theme was archived without a preview." in its preview box.
  • In another language, the ticker's label and section names and both notes are translated.
  • Home: under Avatars, a Recently added card (a cyan New label, then how many in each section: Homebrew 19 · Themes 3 · Avatars 57); Favourites is beside it, under Homebrew. Down from Homebrew goes to Favourites, Down from Avatars to Recently added, Left/Right between the two. Cross opens Homebrew's Recently added; the bar at the top shows Homebrew, Themes, Avatars and L1/R1 move to the other sections' Recently added; Circle goes back to the card. No section's categories (or the home cards' chips) include Recently added any more.
  • Home > Start: Credits & contact. "Made by daedra000 · Claude (Anthropic)", the thanks, and "Send it in with the contact form: ps3.world/contact". Circle goes back.
  • No grey HEN / CFW badges in lists; "CFW only" still shows where it applies.
  • Homebrew icons and previews look sharp at 1080p (they're fetched again once: their addresses changed).
  • Themes > Square on the categories: "Picking something at random..." then a random theme's detail; Circle goes back to the categories. In Avatars it opens a random pack.
  • Soft clicks when moving, a blip on Cross, a lower one on Circle. Home > Select > the last row turns them off, and they stay off after quitting.
  • In a list, Select: "Newest first" (top right, cyan), then "Largest first" (Themes > All themes starts with the 26 MB ones), then A-Z again. The hint says what Select changes to.
  • In Spanish (or any of the 11), a homebrew's description is in that language; English shows for one added later and not translated yet.
  • The log has a line for a cancelled download ("cancelled at N of M bytes").

4c. Packs, previews, big downloads, favourites, Recently added (1.1.0)

  • Homebrew shows its categories in rows of three, inside the screen's margins; a shorter last row's cards widen to fill it, their art still on the right and not stretched. With CELL in Tools (no Misc): Games, Ports, Edits over Tools, Media. Edits' tagline is PS1 & PS2 mods (translated in every language).
  • Avatars > a list: Square on a pack says "N avatars queued", and they download one after another (My downloads shows them). Inside a pack, Square does the same for that pack. With several users, it asks which user first.
  • A theme's detail: Triangle shows the preview full screen; Circle goes back.
  • An Edit (about 4 GB): Size says how long it takes once a download has finished before (it learns the speed). Cross once says "This is 4.40 GB ... Press X again"; the second Cross queues it. With less free space than that, it says so and doesn't start.
  • Select on an item stars it (★ in the list). The home screen's Favourites card (Down from Homebrew) shows how many and their pictures (with none, its note fits on two lines); Cross opens them (also Home > Triangle > R1). The list Cross opens it, Square takes it off. Still there after quitting and reopening.

4b. Queue, My downloads, free space (0.6.0)

  • Home shows "N GB free on the HDD · N downloaded" bottom right, and the free space roughly matches Settings > System Settings > System Information.
  • Start Undertale, press Circle: the list shows the download bottom right ("Undertale 12%"), and you can keep browsing. Open two themes and press Cross on each: they say "Queued: N downloads ahead of it", and the strip says "+2 more". They download one after another.
  • Home > Triangle (My downloads): the queue first (Downloading / Queued badges), then what's on the HDD, newest first, with its path and date. Square on a queued one takes it off; on the running one it cancels.
  • On a finished download, Square once asks "Press Square again", and the second Square deletes the file (check over FTP that it's gone, and that the free space goes up).
  • Downloads from before 0.6.0 show with their file name and no date.
  • Update check: once a newer PS3World-<version>.pkg is uploaded with the catalogue, home says "PS3 World is out: press Square to get it". Square opens it, Cross downloads it to /dev_hdd0/packages, and it installs over this one from Package Manager. Check that your downloads list and settings are still there afterwards. [unverified until this step passes]

5. Theme download (.p3t)

  • Open any theme: it says "Saves to /dev_hdd0/theme/.p3t" (no USB drive needed).
  • Cross: "Checksum OK ... Saved to /dev_hdd0/theme/.p3t".
  • XMB > Settings > Theme Settings > Theme: the theme is listed and applies. (FTPing a .p3t there works, so this should too.)

6. Avatar download (.edat)

  • Avatars > All avatars lists packs ("AeternoBlade 4 avatars · US"). Cross opens a pack as a list of its avatars; Circle goes back to the packs (on the same row).
  • Open any avatar in a pack. With one user on the PS3 it says "Saves to /dev_hdd0/home/0000000N/psn_avatar/PSNA_....edat". With several, Cross first asks which user.
  • Cross: "Checksum OK ... Saved to ...psn_avatar/PSNA_....edat".
  • XMB > PlayStation Network > Account Management > Avatar (or the profile's avatar setting) shows the new avatar. [unverified until this step passes]

7. Offline and errors

  • Quit the app, disconnect the network, then reopen: the lists open from the HDD copy, with "Offline: showing the catalogue from " in yellow. Pages you've already scrolled through show; ones you haven't show the network error in the row.
  • Still offline, open an item and press Cross: "No network connection. Check Settings > Network Settings ...".
  • Set the PS3's date to a year far in the future, reconnect and download: "The secure connection to dl.ps3.world failed. Check the PS3's date and time ...". Set the date back afterwards.
  • Disk full: hard to set up on purpose. The CI test covers it (an impossible size is refused with "Not enough free space (X MB needed, Y MB free)").
  • Checksum mismatch and 404 are covered by the CI test (download: checksum mismatch deleted, download: 404).

8. Files are where the app said

  • With multiMAN or FTP, check that each file from steps 3, 5 and 6 exists at the exact path the app showed, with the size shown.
  • /dev_hdd0/game/PSWD00001/USRDIR/downloaded.txt lists those three, with their sha256 hashes and paths.
